SOUTH DAKOTA — Contract employees use a ground penetrating radar device on the upper portion of the concrete slab spillway at Gavins Stage Dam right here, Could 9, 2012. The radar will help engineers the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Omaha District in conducting a harm assessment to the spillway to see if any repairs may be needed to the frost blanket beneath the concrete. Preliminary tests indicated that at least some of the granular materials in the blanket could have been eliminated by the action of floodwaters throughout last year’s higher releases. If repairs are indicated, people would most likely commence this summer with an anticipated completion prior to the begin of the spring 2013 runoff season. Even during repairs, the spillway would stay functional and safe to use. (U.S. Army Corps of Engineers photo)
