drywall finishing….i need answers fast?

I am in the drywall business (my brother in-law’s company), but have only been for a short time! We have been hiring crews to do our finishing, hovever this job he decided we should do it ourselves! Smooth walls 30′ long with no doors or windows….we used mesh tape! he argues that we should only have to put 2 coats on, i think there should be 3! help me please! any other advice would be greatly appriciated! We do not have automatic tools running everything by hand! used original straight flex in the corners, just b/c it was really crappy framing!
Thank you for your help!!

There is no set rule of x coats or x coats. There are many variables. You suggested pour framing job. Others would be, temp or moisture, experience, quality of mud, quality of the hangers work, etc. Normally, I would think if you can get a good job in 2 coats, your pretty darn good and perhaps shouldn’t hire out the finishing anymore. Myself, and I don’t do this for a living (thank God, as I would likely starve to death) it takes me at least three coats and I have done as many as five.

What ever it takes to get a good finish.
