Painting my house, do I need a primer?

I’m fixing to paint the interior of my house. My house currently has a peachy colored walls and I want to repaint over them using a darker beige/brownisish color. Doing this, will I need a primer? I read about primers and have no idea what they are intended for. Can I just use paint with no primer & will I have to put 2 coats or just 1 considering the colors im going for? Thanks

I suggest you go to a expert at the decor area of a department store to ask about your specific question. They will likely know and even suggest other things. Good luck.

    probably

If the walls are clean and prepped properly there is no reason u Have to prime. If there are areas of great wear, the old coating is compromised, or there are patches etc- then spot priming the areas that need it should be sufficient.

I rarely see interior paint jobs where we have to prime everything.

Chances are when u paint, I Will need two coats. I know there are ” one coat” rollers and some paints say they Will cover in one coat. Let me tell U-Haul I have been painting for 20 years, very rare to get a good finish without two coats of paint.

If u prime, u can get primer tinted to resemble your top coat color, this will help, but again probably 2 coats.

Also- a word about paint that claims to Have paint/primer all in one. In my experience they are nothing special. I noticed no difference between these “special” coatings and the regular paint i have used for years.

The most important thing about painting, is eveyouing you do to the surface before u apply the paint. Surface prep is EVERYTHING!!

    GOOD LUCK :)

    Jim’s right IMO…

but i put KILZ on everything i paint…

everything. i painted the outside of my garage 15 yrs ago…still there…(i kept it very clean tho)

until i sided the garage about 3 yrs ago, last summer a small corner came loose, and in seeing the paint…it was still good.

    i agree w/ jim…but i prime everything…
